A switch makes or breaks a circuit, and the ones on this page run from residential grade wall devices up to fused industrial safety switches. Sort them by duty first. Decora and toggle wall switches such as the Leviton 5601-P2W are single pole, 15A at 120/277 volts, self grounding, and land in a standard device box. Panel and machine work calls for the selector, disconnect and mushroom style bodies rated 30A to 60A at 600 volts, often in an IP65 or NEMA 4X enclosure. Time switches for water heaters and outdoor loads are a separate group again, sold in 120V, 240V and 208-277V versions.
Common questions
What is the difference between a single pole and a three way switch?
A single pole switch controls a load from one location and has two brass terminals plus a ground. A three way is used in pairs to control the same load from two locations and has three terminals plus ground. Count the conductors in the box before ordering, because the wrong device will not land.
Do I need a 15A or a 20A switch?
Match the switch rating to the branch circuit breaker and the load it feeds. A 15A device suits a 15A lighting circuit. A 20A circuit feeding motors, receptacles or heavy commercial lighting needs a 20A rated body. Several devices here are dual rated at 120/277 volts for commercial fluorescent and LED loads.
What does maintained versus momentary contact mean?
Momentary contacts change state only while the operator holds the actuator and spring back on release, which suits start and jog duty. Maintained contacts stay where you leave them, which suits on off selectors and stop devices that latch until twisted free. The contact arrangement is stated on each product page.
Can I pick up a switch order at your counter?
Yes. Counter pickup runs out of 8520 Jane St, Vaughan, Ontario, Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm, closed on weekends. If you would rather ship, Ontario and Quebec orders over $150 go free, other provinces take 10% off at checkout, and transit is usually 3 to 7 business days.
Are the disconnect switches on this page fusible?
Some are and some are not. The Siemens ID362 is a 60A 600V three pole fusible industrial duty switch, while other enclosed disconnects are non fusible and depend on upstream protection. Read the model description for the fuse provision, pole count and enclosure type before specifying one for a service or motor circuit.
