Indoor lighting covers ceiling fixtures, vanity lights, pot lights, track heads, and replacement lamps for rooms inside the house. Plan by lumens rather than watts: a kitchen generally wants 70 to 80 lumens per square foot, while living rooms sit closer to 20 to 30. Keep colour temperature consistent through connected spaces, usually 3000K for warm rooms and 4000K for kitchens and work areas. If you plan to dim LED fixtures, verify the fixture is marked dimmable and pair it with an LED rated dimmer, since older incandescent dimmers often cause flicker.
Common questions
What colour temperature should I use indoors?
3000K reads warm and suits bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways. 4000K is cooler and works well in kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages. 5000K is usually too clinical for living space. Many fixtures here use selectable CCT or MCCT, so you set the temperature on the fixture and one part number covers several rooms.
Why does my LED fixture flicker on a dimmer?
Usually the dimmer. Leading edge dimmers built for incandescent loads often sit above the minimum load an LED fixture can satisfy, which shows up as flicker or buzz. Use a dimmer listed as LED compatible, and check that the fixture itself is marked dimmable, because many low cost LED ceiling lights are not.
How many lumens do I need for a bedroom?
Roughly 20 to 30 lumens per square foot for general bedroom lighting, so a 120 square foot room lands near 3000 lumens total, split between the ceiling fixture and lamps. A single 600 lumen ceiling light will not cover a room on its own. Kitchens and bathrooms need considerably more.
Can I hang a heavy fixture on my existing ceiling box?
Check the box first. Standard ceiling boxes are rated for fixtures up to about 23 kg, and anything heavier, or any ceiling fan, needs a box marked and braced for that purpose. If you cannot tell what is behind the drywall, have an electrician look before the fixture goes up.
