Recessed lighting is the pot light category: housings, trims, and complete slim fixtures that sit flush in a ceiling. The first decision is new construction versus retrofit. New construction housings fasten to joists before drywall goes up, while retrofit trims and slim fixtures install into a finished ceiling through a cut hole. If the fixture sits under attic insulation, specify an IC rated airtight housing so insulation can contact it safely. Trims are sized to the housing, so a 4 inch trim will not seat in a 5 inch can.
Common questions
What does IC rated mean and do I need it?
IC stands for insulation contact. An IC rated housing can be buried in ceiling or attic insulation with no clearance gap. Non IC housings require insulation held back, normally about 3 inches. For pot lights in a ceiling below an insulated attic, specify IC airtight housings such as the RS2000IC/AT-S listed here.
Can I fit LED retrofit trims into my existing housings?
Usually yes. Retrofit trims thread into the existing medium base socket with an adaptor and clip into the can with torsion springs. Match trim size to the can opening, 4 inch to 4 inch and 5 or 6 inch to a 5 or 6 inch housing. Older non standard housings may not accept one.
What size hole do I cut for a 4 inch pot light?
Cut sizes vary by manufacturer and are typically a little larger than the nominal size, often near 4-1/8 inch for a 4 inch slim fixture. Use the cut out dimension printed in the fixture instructions rather than the trade size, because a hole cut oversize leaves a visible gap at the trim.
Do pot lights have to be on a dimmer?
Not required, though most installs use one. If you are dimming, confirm each fixture is marked dimmable and choose an LED compatible dimmer. Add up the wattage of every fixture on the circuit and stay within the dimmer LED load rating, which is far lower than the incandescent figure on the same device.
