Overload relay or manual motor protector, which one do I need?
An overload relay such as the 11RF series mounts under a contactor and gives thermal overload protection only, with short circuit protection coming from an upstream fuse or breaker. An SM1 manual motor protector combines overload and short circuit protection behind a manual handle in one device. Panel space, disconnect requirements and the upstream device decide it.
Where do I set the dial on an overload relay?
Set it to the motor nameplate full load current, not to the contactor rating. Choose a relay whose range brackets that figure rather than one that puts it at the very top or bottom of the scale, because a setting near the end of travel leaves nothing to trim during commissioning.
What does AC3 mean in a contactor listing?
AC3 is the IEC utilization category for squirrel cage motors started and switched while running. A contactor rated 9A AC3 handles a motor drawing up to 9 amps, but the same frame carries a higher AC1 rating for resistive and non-inductive loads. Size to the category that matches how the load actually switches.
Do I need a noise filter across the coil?
A suppression module such as the BFX filter fits across the coil to damp the spike thrown when the coil de-energises. It earns its place when the contactor is driven from a PLC output, or shares a control circuit with electronics that misbehave on switching transients. Match the filter to the coil voltage, not the contactor amperage.
