Weight: 1.2 lb

Techspan MAPO medium-wall, adhesive-lined, crosslinked polyolefin heat shrink tubing in a 4 ft. black length. It shrinks 3 to 1, from a 1.10 in. expanded internal diameter to roughly 0.40 in. recovered, with a 0.095 in. wall and a 600V rating. The internal thermoplastic liner flows as the tube recovers, so the joint is sealed rather than just covered.

Why a 3 to 1 ratio is what makes one part number cover a range of cables

Thin-wall tubing at 2 to 1 has to be matched fairly closely to the cable, which is how a van ends up carrying eight sizes. A 3 to 1 medium-wall recovers far enough that a single stick covers a wide band of conductor and connector sizes, including the step over a crimp barrel or a splice body where the tube has to start large and finish tight on the jacket either side.

The adhesive liner is the other half of the job. Techspan designs MAPO for insulating and sealing low-voltage cable applications where weight and flexibility matter — splices, connections, jacket repairs and terminations. As the tube recovers above roughly 120 degrees Celsius the liner melts and fills the void around the joint, which is what turns a cover into a moisture seal.

Pro tip from the counter

Adhesive-lined tubing is a one-shot part. Once the liner flows it grips, and sliding the tube afterwards tears the glue line and leaves a channel straight through the seal you just made. Cut your pieces and slide every one of them onto the cable before you make the joint, then park them well back from the heat. Most of the scrap off a stick comes from crews trying to walk a tube over a finished splice.

Best for: line crews and industrial maintenance sealing low-voltage splices, jacket repairs and terminations where the joint has to keep moisture out, not just stay insulated.

Common questions

How far down will the 1.1 inch tubing shrink?
Techspan lists an expanded internal diameter of 1.10 inches recovering to roughly 0.40 inches, a 3 to 1 ratio, so one stick covers a wide band of cable and connector sizes.

What does adhesive-lined mean on this tubing?
The tube carries an internal thermoplastic liner that melts and flows as the tube recovers, filling the void around the joint so it is sealed against moisture rather than only covered.

What voltage and temperature is it rated for?
Techspan rates the MAPO medium-wall range at 600 volts with a continuous operating temperature of minus 55 to 110 degrees Celsius.

What length does it come in and what colours?
It is supplied in standard 4 foot lengths, and Techspan lists the MAPO medium-wall range in black only across its eleven standard sizes.
