What is commercial & industrial LED lighting?

Commercial and industrial LED lighting is the family of high-output, durable fixtures built for workplaces rather than homes — warehouses, manufacturing floors, parking lots, building exteriors, loading docks and walkways. Compared with residential fixtures, these are engineered for higher lumen packages, tougher ingress and impact ratings, longer rated life and easier serviceability, often with 0-10V dimming, integrated photocells or motion sensors.

The core categories you will specify are high bay (open ceilings 12 ft and up), wall packs and area/flood lights (exterior walls and poles), bollards (pedestrian pathways), and vapor-tight linear (wet, dusty or wash-down spaces). Maple is a supply-only distributor: we stock and ship the fixtures, but photometric layout, install and code compliance should be handled by your licensed electrician or lighting designer.

High bay: UFO vs linear — which do I need?

UFO high bays are compact round fixtures that throw a concentrated, roughly circular beam — ideal for open warehouse aisles, point loads and tall racking where you want punch and a tidy grid layout. Linear high bays spread a wider, more even wash and pair well with continuous rows over assembly lines, retail-style stockrooms and aisles where uniformity matters more than raw center-beam intensity.

As a rule of thumb: pick UFO for higher mounting heights and aisle/spot coverage, and linear where you want broad, even illumination and a lower-glare appearance. Both come in multiple wattage and lumen packages and selectable CCT; confirm the exact distribution and spacing with a lighting designer for your ceiling height and rack pitch.

How many lumens / what wattage for my ceiling height?

Higher ceilings need more lumens per fixture and tighter optics to deliver usable light at the work plane. The general pattern is: low ceilings take lower-wattage fixtures on wider spacing, while 25 ft-plus ceilings call for higher-output high bays with narrower beams. The table below gives general planning ranges only — not a photometric design.

Target footcandles vary widely by task (general storage vs. fine assembly vs. parking), so the right answer is always a layout calculation. Use these ranges to scope a project and budget, then have a licensed pro confirm fixture count, wattage and spacing.

Ceiling height Typical high bay wattage (ballpark) Lumen ballpark per fixture
10–15 ft Lower-output, roughly 80–150 W class ~10,000–20,000 lm
15–25 ft Mid-output, roughly 150–240 W class ~20,000–33,000 lm
25–40 ft High-output, roughly 240 W and up ~33,000 lm and up

Ranges are general planning guidance only; confirm with a photometric layout.

Wall packs & area lighting: placement, photocells & dark-sky

Wall packs mount on building exteriors for entrances, loading areas and perimeter security; area and flood lights mount on poles or walls to cover lots and yards. Mounting height, spacing and beam distribution (Type II/III/IV/V) determine uniformity and whether you create dark gaps or hot spots. Many fixtures offer integrated photocells for dusk-to-dawn operation and motion sensors to cut runtime.

For dark-sky and light-trespass control, choose full-cutoff (fully shielded) fixtures, appropriate backlight/uplight/glare (BUG) ratings and warmer CCTs where required. Some municipalities regulate exterior lighting, so confirm local bylaws with your electrician or designer before finalizing the layout.

Bollards & pathway lighting

Bollards are short, ground-mounted fixtures that light walkways, building entries, plazas and landscaped paths at a pedestrian scale — delivering guidance and safety without the glare of overhead poles. They come in cutoff (downward) and symmetrical distributions; cutoff styles reduce glare and light trespass on adjacent properties.

Spacing depends on bollard height, output and the width of the path. Specify wet-location-rated, impact-resistant housings for exterior use and confirm mounting (surface vs. anchor base) against the civil/landscape plan with your installer.

Wet, vapor-tight & cold-Canadian ratings (IP/damp/wet)

Fixture location ratings matter: dry, damp and wet locations each demand the right enclosure. Vapor-tight linear fixtures (gasketed, sealed) suit parking garages, food processing, wash-down areas, coolers and freezers, and anywhere moisture, dust or contaminants are present. Look at the IP rating (e.g., IP65+) and the UL/CSA wet- or damp-location listing for the actual install condition.

For Canadian climates, also check the rated operating temperature range — cold-weather and freezer-rated drivers matter for unheated warehouses, exterior fixtures and cold storage. Confirm the listed location category and temperature rating on each product page, and verify suitability with your electrician.

DLC, CSA & energy rebates

DLC (DesignLights Consortium) listing and ENERGY STAR are the qualification programs that many Canadian utility rebate and incentive programs reference — if a fixture is on the DLC Qualified Products List, it is more likely to be rebate-eligible. CSA (or equivalent) certification is what makes a product acceptable for installation in Canada.

Rebate programs, eligibility and amounts vary by province and utility and change over time, so we do not quote specific rebate figures. Check current programs with your utility, the manufacturer's DLC listing, and your electrician. Many products in our catalogue note their listings on the product page.

Application Recommended fixture type
Warehouse / open high-ceiling interior UFO or linear high bay
Parking lot / yard Area & flood lighting on poles (photocell/motion)
Building exterior / entrances Wall packs (full-cutoff, photocell)
Walkway / pathway / plaza LED bollards
Wet / processing / cold storage Vapor-tight linear (wet-location, IP-rated)

FAQ

UFO vs linear high bay — what's the difference?

UFO high bays are compact and round with a concentrated beam, best for open aisles, tall racking and spot coverage. Linear high bays cast a wider, more even wash and suit continuous rows and uniform illumination. Pick UFO for height and punch, linear for broad evenness.

How many lumens do I need for a 24 ft ceiling?

A 24 ft ceiling typically calls for mid- to high-output high bays (roughly the 150–240 W class as a planning ballpark), but the exact lumens depend on your target footcandles, spacing and task. Have a licensed lighting designer run a photometric layout to confirm fixture count and wattage.

Are these fixtures DLC listed and rebate-eligible?

Many commercial LED fixtures are DLC-qualified and CSA-certified, which is what most Canadian utility rebate programs reference. Eligibility and amounts vary by province and utility and change over time — check the product page's listings and confirm current rebates with your utility.

Do you carry wet-location and vapor-tight fixtures?

Yes. We stock vapor-tight linear fixtures (gasketed, IP-rated) for parking garages, wash-down areas, food processing and cold storage. Check the product page for the IP rating, UL/CSA wet- or damp-location listing and operating temperature range for your install condition.

Can Maple design my lighting layout?

No. Maple Electric Supply is a supply-only distributor — we stock and ship fixtures but do not provide photometric design, installation or code sign-off. Use a licensed electrician or lighting designer for layout, install and compliance; we'll help you source the right products.

Do you ship across Canada and offer contractor quotes?

Yes. We ship Canada-wide with fast Ontario and Quebec delivery and will-call pickup, all in CAD. For project volumes, request a contractor quote and we'll help you spec and price the fixtures.
