What is the difference between damp and wet location fixtures?
Damp location fixtures handle humidity and condensation but not water striking them, so they belong under covered porches, soffits, and roofed entries. Wet location fixtures are sealed and gasketed against rain and snow hitting the fixture directly, which is what an exposed exterior wall, a post lantern, or a bollard requires.
Can I use any LED bulb in an enclosed outdoor fixture?
No. Enclosed fixtures trap heat, and an LED lamp not rated for enclosed use runs hot and fails early. Look for enclosed fixture rated on the lamp packaging. Also check the stated operating temperature range, since Canadian winters push exterior fixtures below what some LED lamps tolerate.
Do exterior lights need to be on a GFCI circuit?
Outdoor receptacles require GFCI protection. Hard wired exterior lighting generally does not, but circuits are sometimes shared and local inspection practice varies. Your electrician will size and protect the circuit to the current Canadian Electrical Code and your municipality requirements.
What do I need to mount a post lantern?
