Landscape lighting here is mostly 12V low voltage: path lights, hardscape paver lights, and the transformers that feed them, plus full height LED bollards that run on line voltage. A low voltage system starts with a transformer sized to the load, so total the wattage of every fixture and leave about 20 percent headroom. Voltage drop is the usual problem on long runs, so use heavier gauge burial cable and split the yard into shorter legs. Bollards are hardwired and need a direct burial feed and a solid base.
Common questions
What size transformer do I need for my landscape lights?
Add the wattage of every fixture, then add about 20 percent so the transformer is not sitting at its limit. Twelve 6W path lights come to 72 watts, which the 88W transformer listed here handles with room to spare. If you expect to add fixtures in a later phase, size up now.
Why are the path lights at the end of the run dim?
That is voltage drop. Over a long 12V cable the voltage available at the far end falls and the last fixtures lose brightness. The fixes are heavier gauge burial cable, splitting the yard into several shorter runs from the transformer, or using a multi-tap transformer to compensate.
Can low voltage landscape cable be buried directly?
Use cable rated for direct burial and follow the depth your electrician and local inspector require. Low voltage runs are not held to the same burial depth as line voltage, but the cable still needs mechanical protection where it crosses driveways or garden beds that get dug up regularly.
Will these fixtures hold up through a Canadian winter?
The 12V path and hardscape fixtures here are built in aluminum for outdoor use through freeze and thaw cycles. Check the location rating on each product page, keep the transformer enclosure up off the ground, and clear snow off lenses so meltwater does not pool and refreeze around the housing.
