A planning starting point using common illuminance and spacing guidelines, not a photometric layout. Beam angle, ceiling height, wall colour and furniture all shift the result. Joists, ducting and insulation clearances decide where a light can physically go, and fixtures in a fire-separated ceiling need a fire-rated housing. Have the install confirmed by a licensed electrician to the Canadian Electrical Code.

LED downlights are recessed fixtures that throw light straight down from the ceiling, sold here as slim canless pot lights, gimbal trims, retrofit trims, and shower trims. Slim canless models drop into a shallow ceiling cut and need no housing, which helps in renovations with tight joist space. Many units are 3CCT or MCCT selectable, so you choose 3000K, 4000K, or 5000K at install. Check the location rating before ordering: showers and soffits need damp or wet rated fixtures, not standard dry location trims.
Common questions
How far apart should 4 inch downlights be spaced?
A common starting point is spacing equal to half the ceiling height, so about 4 feet apart on an 8 foot ceiling. Tighten that over kitchen counters and loosen it in hallways. Keep the outer row roughly 2 to 3 feet off the wall so light lands on cabinets rather than baseboards.
What is the difference between a gimbal downlight and a fixed one?
A gimbal trim tilts, so you can aim light at artwork, a backsplash, or down a sloped ceiling. Fixed downlights point straight down only. The 3.5 inch and 4 inch gimbal models here are the usual pick for angled ceilings and accent work, while fixed trims handle general room coverage.
Do slim canless pot lights need a housing?
No. Slim models mount through the drywall cut on spring clips and wire to a small junction box that sits above the ceiling, which is why they fit shallow spaces. Traditional trims, including the shower and baffle trims listed here, do need a matching recessed housing.
Which downlight can I use in a shower?
Use a trim rated for damp or wet locations, such as the lensed shower trims in this collection, since the lens keeps moisture off the lamp. Open gimbal trims are dry location only. If the fixture sits in the direct spray zone, confirm the wet rating with your electrician or call (905) 553-7171.
Can I order downlights by the case?
Case and single quantities are both available. Orders ship Canada-wide in about 3 to 7 business days, free to Ontario and Quebec addresses over $150, with 10% off applied at checkout for other provinces. Contractors can collect at the counter at 8520 Jane St, Vaughan, ON. A price match guarantee applies.
