Push button manual motor starters combine motor overload and short circuit protection with front mounted start and stop buttons, so an operator runs the motor from the device itself instead of a separate control station. The Lovato SM1P series on this page is the button operated counterpart to the rotary SM1R. Fifteen frames cover the range, with the SM1P0016 through SM1P0650 at the small end, the SM1P1400 and SM1P1800 in the middle, and the SM1P3200 and SM1P4000 for higher current motors. Set the trip adjustment to the nameplate full load amps of the motor once the unit is wired in.
Common questions
When would I choose the SM1P over the rotary SM1R?
Pick the push button model when the operator expects distinct start and stop buttons at the machine, or when you are matching an existing station so training and muscle memory carry over. The rotary knob version is easier to read from across a room. Protection performance is the same either way.
Does this device still need a separate overload relay?
No. Overload protection is built in and set by the adjustment on the unit. Add a contactor only where the circuit needs remote or automatic control. For a motor started and stopped at the machine, the SM1P covers protection, switching and local isolation in one device.
How do I know which frame matches my motor?
Work from nameplate current rather than horsepower, because voltage and service factor change the amps a given horsepower actually draws. Then choose the SM1P frame whose current band contains that value. Landing near the middle of the band leaves adjustment room after the motor is commissioned.
Can you ship one to a site outside Ontario?
Yes. We ship Canada-wide with typical transit of 3 to 7 business days, and orders going outside Ontario and Quebec take 10% off at checkout. Ontario and Quebec orders over $150 ship at no charge. Pickup is available at the Vaughan counter on Jane Street, weekdays 8am to 4pm.
Are accessories such as auxiliary contacts included?
The listing covers the starter itself. Auxiliary contact blocks, undervoltage releases and enclosures are separate items in the Lovato line, so check what your panel drawing calls for before ordering. If you are unsure which accessory fits a given SM1P frame, send us the part number and we will look it up.
