Where a light fixture has to go on a ceiling with almost no depth behind it, such as over a joist, a strapped ceiling or a concrete slab, a full-depth box won't fit. The Ortech 56111 (formerly A-5) is a 4 in round shallow ceiling pan box, 1/2 in deep, drawn from galvanized steel. Electricians use this pan box to hang a fixture where only one cable comes in.
Why electricians pick it
- Only 1/2 in deep, so it fits where a standard octagon or round box can't.
- Drawn one-piece galvanized steel body with no seams.
- 4 in round size suits ceiling fixture canopies.
- Low unit price for production work on multi-unit jobs.

Pro tip from the counter
A 1/2 in pan box has room for very few conductors, so it's meant for a single cable ending at the light, not for splicing through to the next fixture. If the run continues on or you need a device clamp's worth of space, use a deeper box and have the electrician check box fill under the CEC before the ceiling closes.
Best for: ceiling fixtures over joists, shallow ceilings on concrete or strapping, condo and apartment fit-outs, service replacements
