When a ceiling outlet box is too shallow for the splices, or a new drywall layer or strapping has buried the box behind the finished surface, an extension ring is the quick fix. The Ortech 55171K is a 4 in octagon extension ring, 2-1/8 in deep, drawn from galvanized steel with 1/2 in and 3/4 in knockouts. Electricians use it to add wiring room at light and junction box locations.

Pro tip from the counter
When you calculate conductor fill, add the ring's 344 mL to the base box's marked volume and count every conductor and device in the combined space, as the CEC box-fill rules allow. Then make sure the ring is bonded to the box, since the fixture and cover now mount to the ring.
