Siemens Q series breakers are the plug-on breakers used in Siemens load centres across Canadian residential and light commercial work. Standard single-pole and two-pole thermal-magnetic breakers here start around $20 for a Q220 20 amp and run through Q240, Q250 and up to the Q3100 100 amp three-pole at roughly $470. GFCI and AFCI versions start near $105. The Canadian Electrical Code requires AFCI protection on most dwelling-unit branch circuits and GFCI protection in wet locations, so the code-required device matters as much as the amperage. Q series breakers fit Siemens panels; they are not a substitute for another manufacturer's bus without a listed classification.
Common questions
Will a Siemens Q breaker fit my panel?
Q series breakers are designed for Siemens load centres. Some breakers carry a classified listing for use in other manufacturers' panels, but that has to be stated on the breaker and the panel label. Do not assume physical fit means it is approved.
What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI breakers?
GFCI protects people from ground faults and is required in wet locations such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages and outdoors. AFCI detects arcing faults that can start fires and is required on most dwelling-unit branch circuits under the Canadian Electrical Code. Some breakers combine both functions.
How do I choose the amperage?
The breaker protects the conductor, so amperage is set by the wire size and the load calculation, not by what the appliance draws. Oversizing a breaker on undersized wire is a fire risk. If you are not sure, have a licensed electrician size the circuit.
