Common questions
Hawkbill or straight blade for cable work?
Hawkbill blades pull the jacket toward you and reduce the risk of nicking the conductor underneath, which is why it is the traditional electrician's shape. Straight blades are more general-purpose. Most electricians keep a hawkbill for cable and a utility knife for everything else.
Are these knives one-handed open?
Most Klein folding electrician knives include a thumb stud or notch for one-hand opening, with a lockback to keep the blade open under load. Check the spec for each SKU, since traditional non-locking models are still offered for users who prefer them.
How do I avoid nicking conductors when skinning cable?
Score the jacket only, do not cut through it. Roll the cable, finish the cut with a flex, and inspect the conductor. For repetitive work, a dedicated cable stripper is safer and faster than a knife.
