A whole-home surge protector is cheap insurance for furnaces, heat pumps, appliances and electronics. The Intermatic IG1240RC3 is a 120/240 VAC single-phase SPD that can be installed as Type 1 on the line side of the service or Type 2 on the load side of the panel. It gives six modes of protection with TPMOV thermally protected varistors, a green status LED, and a Type 3R plastic enclosure for indoor or outdoor mounting.

Pro tip from the counter

For a Type 2 install, Intermatic's instructions give a 240 V, 20 A, 2-pole breaker as the maximum recommended size, so don't land it on a larger spare breaker. On a finished basement wall where a surface box looks out of place, add the IG1240FMP33 flush mount kit.
