Ceilings strapped with furring or hat channel push the drywall face down, and a standard pan box ends up sitting too deep. The Arlington FB423 fan and fixture box is built for 1/2 in or 5/8 in drywall over 3/4 in furring strips or hat channel, attaching to the joist through a shipped-in-place centre screw. It is CSA rated 50 lb for a fan or fixture in Canada, and UL rated 70 lb fan and 200 lb fixture.

Pro tip from the counter
Strapped ceilings are common in Ontario houses, and a box meant for drywall straight on the joist ends up recessed behind the board. Check whether the ceiling is strapped before rough-in; if it is, this is the box Arlington made for that 3/4 in gap.
