Holding a box against a joist while reaching for a driver is slow work on a ladder. The Arlington FB426 press-on fan and fixture box has gripping tangs that hold it on the joist until the shipped-in-place centre screw is driven. It gives 16.0 cu in for 1/2 in or 5/8 in drywall ceilings. The CSA rating is 50 lb for a fan or fixture, the figure for Canadian installs; its UL rating is 70 lb fan and 200 lb fixture.

Pro tip from the counter
For a ceiling under an unheated attic, order the FB426F instead. It is the same press-on box with a flange that forms a barrier against air infiltration, so there is no need to caulk or tape around a plain box to pass an air-sealing inspection.
Best for: fast production rough-in, bedroom and living room fan boxes, renovations with open joists, fire-rated drywall ceilings
