Replacing a light with a ceiling fan often means the old box is the weak link. The Arlington FBS405 is a plated steel pan box for fans and fixtures that screws directly to the joist, with fan-bracket screws already parked in place. It is shallow (6.0 cu in) for 1/2 in or 5/8 in drywall. Its 70 lb fan rating is the UL figure; for Canadian installs Arlington's CSA rating is 50 lb for a fan or fixture.

Pro tip from the counter
At 6 cu in, Arlington's chart allows only three #14 conductors in this pan box, so it works for a single cable at the end of a run. If the fan location also feeds on to another light or needs a separate fan and light switch leg, step up to a deeper box.
Best for: end-of-run ceiling fans and fixtures, joist-mounted light locations, steel box specs, service upgrades from light to fan
