LED Downlights & Recessed Lighting: Complete Buyer's Guide for Electricians

Why LED Recessed Lighting Has Taken Over

LED recessed downlights have replaced incandescent and CFL pot lights as the default for new construction and retrofit work across Canada. The combination of IC-rated housings, long life (25,000–50,000 hours), and dimmability down to 5% makes LED downlights the preferred choice for residential, commercial, and hospitality applications.

Understanding Recessed Light Housing Types

New Construction (NC) Housings

Installed before drywall in open ceilings. Requires separate IC or non-IC housing plus trim. The housing mounts to joists with bars; the trim drops in from below. Most residential electricians use 4-inch or 6-inch new construction housings.

Remodel (Retrofit) Housings

Installs through the drywall hole without attic access. The spring clips grip the ceiling from below. Retrofit LED modules (the trim + LED together) like the Halo SLD or Lithonia WF6 have made this the fastest residential retrofit option — no housing required, just the module.

IC vs. Non-IC

IC-rated (Insulation Contact): Required when insulation will contact the fixture. Ontario Building Code and CEC require IC-rated fixtures in insulated ceiling assemblies. Non-IC: Requires 3-inch clearance from insulation. Never use non-IC in a direct-contact application — it's a fire hazard and code violation.

Key Specs to Understand

Colour Temperature (CCT)

2700K = warm white (residential bedrooms, living rooms). 3000K = soft white (kitchens, retail). 4000K = neutral white (offices, commercial). 5000K = daylight (task lighting, garages). Most residential work defaults to 2700K or 3000K.

CRI (Colour Rendering Index)

CRI 80+ is standard. CRI 90+ is required for retail, hospitality, and anywhere accurate colour perception matters. Avoid CRI below 80 for any visible space.

Lumens and Wattage

A 6-inch LED module typically produces 650–1,200 lumens at 9–15W. A 4-inch produces 400–700 lumens at 7–10W. Aim for roughly 50–70 lumens per square foot in living spaces; 60–100 in kitchens; 40–60 in bedrooms.

Dimmer Compatibility

Not all LED downlights are compatible with all dimmers. Always verify the fixture's compatibility list. Lutron and Leviton publish compatibility databases. Mismatched dimmers cause flickering, buzzing, and poor low-end performance. Specify 0-10V dimming for large commercial projects.

Popular Product Lines

  • Halo RL Series: 4-inch and 6-inch LED modules with colour-selectable CCT. Ideal for residential new construction and retrofit.
  • Lithonia Lighting WF Series: Ultra-thin, wafer-style LED downlight. Popular for low-ceiling condos and retrofit applications.
  • RAB Lighting Spotlight: Commercial-grade IC-rated fixtures with 5-year warranty. Common in institutional and retail.

Code Notes for Ontario Electricians

  • All recessed fixtures in insulated ceilings must be IC-rated (Ontario Building Code Part 9 and CEC Section 30).
  • Air-tight (AT) rating required in air barriers per energy code (SB-10/SB-12).
  • Wet-location rated (WL) required in shower enclosures and exterior soffits.
