IP67 Electrical Products: What the Rating Means and What to Buy

What Does IP67 Actually Mean?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are defined by IEC 60529. The two digits tell you how well a product resists solid particles and liquids. IP67: 6 = fully dust-tight; 7 = protected against temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. IP67 is the standard for outdoor electrical enclosures, connectors, and fixtures that face rain, wash-down, and flooding risk.

IP67 vs. Other Common Ratings

Rating Dust Water Typical Use
IP44 Partial Splash Indoor damp areas
IP54 Partial Spray Outdoor covered
IP65 Dust-tight Jets Outdoor exposed, wash-down
IP67 Dust-tight Immersion 1m/30min Grade-level, wet areas, pools
IP68 Dust-tight Deep immersion Submersible pumps, underwater

Where IP67 Is Required in Canada

  • Underground junction boxes in wet locations (CEC Rule 18-104)
  • Car washes and wash bays where direct water spray and pooling occur
  • Pool and spa electrical (though IP68 is often preferred)
  • Grade-level outdoor fixtures subject to standing water
  • Industrial food processing areas with frequent wash-down
  • Parking garage lighting subject to snow melt and water drainage

Key IP67 Product Categories

IP67 Junction Boxes and Enclosures

Polycarbonate and ABS enclosures with silicone gaskets and stainless steel latches. Used for terminal blocks, small controls, and field wiring connections in outdoor or wet environments.

IP67 Industrial Connectors

Multi-pin industrial connectors (16A–125A) rated IP67 are used in machinery, modular buildings, and outdoor distribution boards. Brands: Legrand (P17 Tempra series), PCE, ABB.

IP67 LED Fixtures

Vapor-tight LED strip fixtures and outdoor LED flood lights rated IP67 are standard for parking garages, car washes, cold storage, and covered outdoor areas. Look for IK10 (impact resistance) in addition to IP67 for exposed locations.

IP67 Cable Glands

Stainless steel and nylon cable glands maintain the IP67 rating of an enclosure where cables enter. Proper cable gland selection (matching cable diameter) is critical — a mis-sized gland negates the IP rating entirely.

Installation Notes

  • IP ratings are for the product as designed — drilling extra knockouts or improper gland installation will void the IP rating.
  • Silicone gaskets need inspection every 3–5 years in harsh UV environments.
  • Stainless steel hardware is required in marine or highly corrosive locations.
  • Check that junction box IP rating is maintained after adding conduit entries.
