  • SM1R rotary motor protection breakers from $131, spanning SM1R0063 through SM1R0650
  • Higher-range rotary units such as the SM1R1400 at $149 and SM1R3200 at $253
  • SM1P push button starters from $118, up to the SM1P4000 at $213
  • Mid-range SM1P1800 and SM1P1000 at $123 and $176

Starters ship across Canada in 3 to 7 business days. Ontario and Quebec orders that clear $150 ship free, other regions get 10% off at checkout, and every unit is priced under our price match guarantee at a 100% Canadian-owned distributor.

Manual motor starters, also called manual motor protectors, combine an adjustable thermal overload with magnetic short circuit protection and a handle that isolates the motor. The Lovato SM1 line here comes in two operator styles: SM1R with a rotary handle and SM1P with start and stop push buttons. Order by adjustment range, not by a single amp figure. The digits in the part number give the top of that range, so SM1R0650 covers up to 6.5 amps and SM1R3200 up to 32 amps. Set the dial to motor nameplate full load current.
Common questions
How do I read the digits in an SM1 part number?
The four digits give the top of the adjustable current band with an implied decimal. SM1R0160 covers 1 to 1.6 amps, SM1R0400 tops out around 4 amps, SM1R1400 at 14 amps and SM1R3200 at 32 amps. Choose the band that puts your motor nameplate current inside the range rather than at the very edge of it.
SM1R or SM1P, what is the difference on the machine?
SM1R uses a rotary handle that shows position clearly and is generally arranged for lockout, which is worth confirming on the specific model. SM1P puts start and stop push buttons on the face for operators who expect button control at the equipment. The protection inside is the same, so this is a question of how the machine gets operated.
Does a manual motor starter replace a contactor?
Not where control has to be remote or automatic. A manual starter is worked by hand at the device, which fits a local fan or pump. If the motor starts from a PLC, a float or a pressure switch, you still need a contactor, with the manual protector handling overload, short circuit protection and isolation ahead of it.
Can I add auxiliary or trip contacts to an SM1?
Lovato lists accessory blocks for the SM1 family covering auxiliary and trip signalling, which is how a panel reports a tripped motor back to a controller. Accessories are tied to the frame, so check the accessory part number against your exact starter model instead of assuming blocks from another series will seat.
How long does a starter take to reach a plant outside Ontario?
Orders move Canada-wide and usually land in 3 to 7 business days. Customers outside Ontario and Quebec take 10 percent off at checkout, while Ontario and Quebec orders over $150 ship free. If a maintenance crew is close by, the counter at 8520 Jane St in Vaughan, Ontario handles pickup.
