What does a NEMA rating mean?
NEMA ratings describe what an enclosure keeps out: NEMA 1 covers indoor dust and contact, 3R handles outdoor rain, 4 seals against hose-directed water, and 4X adds corrosion resistance. Match the rating to the environment.
NEMA 3R vs NEMA 4 — which do I need outdoors?
NEMA 3R protects against rain, sleet and snow — fine for most outdoor disconnects. NEMA 4 seals against hose-directed water and wind-blown dust; choose it for washdown areas or harsher exposure.
Can I drill my own conduit entries in an enclosure?
Yes — field-drilling conduit entries is normal for general-purpose enclosures. Use fittings rated to match the enclosure (especially on NEMA 4/4X) so the sealing and corrosion rating is preserved.
